Sybian Noise Control
One major problem with the Sybian machine - and with some other vibrators, I might add - is the noise they generate (and the noise you or your wife generate, but I will not cover that here). To completely relax is difficult in a noise-polluted environment, and particularly so when you worry about your neigbours or kids (or parents) hearing. And relaxation is of paramount importance if you want to set the atmosphere for sexual enjoyment.

This is the reason why I write this short article about noise control and various "tweaks" you might try to make your sybian run more quietly and transmit less vibrations to the floor. I will try and keep it as simple as possible theoretically, and yet cover the most essential aspects of acoustics and noise control.

Reaction Force is the source of the problem. If I stand face to face with a friend, and give him a hard shove to the chest so that he topples backwards, I have to carefully keep my balance myself, because I am subjecting myself to a force exactly equal to that with which I affect my friend, but in the opposite direction. The same goes for vibrators. When the Sybian makes the attachment vibrate, this creates an equal but "opposite" vibration in the machine itself. The machine weighs about a hundred times more than the attachment, so the vibration is a hundred times smaller, but it contains just as much energy.

The vibration energy in the machine must go someplace. Energy never disappears. Most of it is converted into heat, but some of it is radiated as sound. In a "perfect" world, the Sybian machine would have infinite weight, so that it would not move one little bit. Or it would be perfectly connected to the floor, which would be infinitely stiff - thus creating a situation where the entire earth would move just a tiny little bit when the attachment moved in the opposite direction. But such perfect situations do not exist. Even if you have a concrete floor, it will "flex" a bit, and vibrations from the machine will transmit to your neighbours. Since the floor is big, it has to move just a very tiny little bit to emit a sound that is perceptible.

So, how do we control and improve the situation?

There are a couple of different ways to go, and you can use all of them simultaneously if you want. The first thing you might try - and which many have tried already - is to ISOLATE the vibrations. This means that you stop them from spreading from the machine to the floor. A piece of foam or a folded towel under the Sybian might improve things, but these are hardly ideal solutions. These will work to some extent at particular frequencies, and do little or nothing at other frequencies. What I suggest is that you try and find a material that has been developed for the purpose of vibration control. Isolation is described as "achieved by inserting compliant element between disturbance source and structure to be isolated" - and the key word is "compliant". The compliance of the isolation material has to be "tuned" so that it will make the disturbance source "float" at all frequencies that it generates. The spring resonance frequency has to be very low in the case of the Sybian.

My suggestion is that you try and find Sorbothane damping feet intended for use with loudspeakers by hifi enthusiasts. Many brand names exist, and you should try and find a model that is suitable for quite heavy applications (namely, the weight of a sybian + rider). "Audio Quest - SorboGel Big Feet" are a suggestion (no more than 10 pounds of weight per piece, so you need quite a few). Or you might want to contact http://www.sorbothane.com and ask where you can find a thick sheet of sorbothane for industrial applications from a dealer near you. That might be cheaper than the overpriced audiophile stuff. Sorbothane feet that are thick enough (2 inches or so) will provide over 90% isolation - lowering the transmitted sound more than 10 dB, which is the same as taking more than half of it away. If you decide to look for the industrial sorbothane, you want to look for "durometer" of about thirty (shore 00), which is a way of describing how soft the material is. Lower durometers mean that the material is better at isolating low frequency resonance, which is what we want in the case of the Sybian.

Another approach is that you try and find a car tire inner tube of appropriate dimensions. Inflate it and place it under the Sybian and see how it works. This will also work as a spring and isolate the Sybian from the floor.

Allright. That was isolation. Now for the other approach: DAMPING. Isolation works to move a problem from one area to another. Since the vibrations cannot be transmitted to the floor, they stay in the Sybian machine, which will vibrate more violently than before. This will cause it to resonate and the sides to flex and emit sound. The energy has to go someplace, after all. This is where damping comes in. We want to convert the energy to heat, not sound.

To the interior or exterior of the Sybian, we want to add a sheet of material that makes it heavier and provides a measure of "internal damping". If you place the Sybian on sorbothane feet, this alone provides excellent damping, since sorbothane is not only an excellent isolator, but also a very good damper. In addition to this, you can find self-adhesive sheets of sorbothane that can be placed inside the Sybian - at strategic spots or all over the interior. Since this makes the Sybian heavier, it also means that it will not move as much, and thus it will emit less sound. You will have to find out just how much free space there is inside your Sybian, and place the sorbothane accordingly. You might also touch a fingertip to the Sybian at different spots and at many different speeds to find out where the problem areas are, and treat these more heavily.

If you can’t easily find sorbothane in self-adhesive sheets, you can use bitumen rubber instead, which is a material often used to soundproof cars from engine and tire noise. You can probably find sheets of self-adhesive bitumen from a car accessories retailer nearby. The thicker and heavier the better!

I will also give you a less Sybian-oriented suggestion, but one certainly related to noise control and sexuality: Buy some acoustic panels and install them in your ceiling and perhaps on some of the walls. These are usually effective over a broad frequency range, and their function is not so much to prevent sound from leaking through the walls, but to make the walls radiate less energy back into the room. This creates an environment with less reverberation and gives a very soothing, relaxing quiet atmosphere. It is perfect for sleeping, and just as perfect for sex. "I just bought a Sybian and I live in an apartment (top floor). The noise and vibration produced by the Sybian shakes the floors, walls and has gotten my 67 yr. old downstairs neighbor alarmed. I can't be the first person who has had this problem. Do you know of anyone who has already dealt with this problem? If so do you know what they did? I'm already combing my yellow pages looking for "vibration dampening" products or some sort of rubber mat that might take care of the problem. So far no luck... Sybian on my bed is okay (not great though)... but it is still so noisy that I have had to wait until my next door neighbor (we share a common BR wall) isn't home. Any advice?"

"I know your concerns are serious...but I am also laughing. When I started using it in one of our host couple's homes in an upstairs bedroom, others were in the living room below and told me how the vibration coming through the ceiling had everyone in laughter. One of the women was a real screamer...but they could not hear her, only Sybian shaking the house! Fortunately these were swingers..not nice little old ladies.

Seriously I don't have a solution other than some vibration dampening material. On a bed makes it very hard to use I would think. The wild gyrations of the insert that everyone laughs at when I demonstrate it are not nearly so wild once inside and your body dampens some of the noise from the tops..spinning. But still you have the vibration below on through the floor from the motor.

Another idea: "One thing you might do is check a sporting goods or discount store for the sleeping-bag pads of closed-cell foam. I believe you could fold one double, giving two layers per pad, and still get it under the base of a Sybian. I don't know if this would work, but it's proved useful in quieting noisy shop machines of about the motor size of Sybians. Also, you can buy them everywhere and they only cost a few bucks. You'll still have the airborne noise of the machine (and maybe its rider!) But enough hard foam should keep it from turning the whole floor into a sounding board."
